Future Directions
The NICHD research program has made a great deal of progress in the investigation of reading disabilities. These findings are potentially of great benefit to most children. However, the work is not done and not all the issues are resolved. There are still some children remaining with reading problems in the most successful interventions described above. Future research will investigate effective treatments for teaching children who have no knowledge of English to read English. The on-going longitudinal intervention studies sponsored by the NICHD will be bringing important new knowledge to the field in the continuing effort to make every child a reader at an early age.
