Potty Training and Reading

Will teaching my son to read slow down the process of potty training? I don’t pressure him to either learn to read or use the potty. Should I?

The two aren’t necessarily connected, however, they are equally important. Children can’t learn everything at once, each new learning step needs to be worked on as it comes up. I would back off the “teaching him to read” concepts for now as he’s only three, and focus on the potty training. Potty training is an important 3-year-old concept that needs to be mastered, while reading is better left to the 4-year-old age. Playing Phonics program music and continue to help him learn his letters and sounds and other pre-reading skills like identifying same and different, big and little, opposites, left to right progression, etc. Keep these activities at a lower background level while he is working on the physical aspects of being three. No one can “eat an elephant” in one gulp–but anyone can make a dent by eating one bite a time. Good luck.
