Speech Impairment

What is a good way to encourage a child with a speech impairment?

Well, I’m a schoolteacher, not a speech therapist, so I’m not quite sure what to say about your child specifically. I don’t know his/her age, specific speech patterns/conditions, or what steps you’ve taken to help your child with their impairment.

My first step when working with a child who is struggling with their speech patterns is to strongly encourage the parents to seek professional help. A speech therapist can begin working with children as young as 2 and correct many childhood speech patterns before they become permanent patterns. I have seen tremendous success when the parents, therapist, and teacher all are on the same page, using the same verbiage, and being consistent with each other in their help for the child. As a teacher, I very carefully discuss every situation with the parents and closely follow the recommendation of the therapist. Make sure that you reinforce every progress made with lots of love and encouragement.
