Letter Recognition
My son only recognizes his ABC’s in order. When you try to mix them up he cannot name one. How can I help him this summer to be ready for first grade?
The trouble with learning the alphabet in order is that it can’t be applied to anything other than singing the ABC song. I mean, we can’t read anything with abcdefg, etc. When I teach reading, I start with the letter “m.” This is the letter “m” and is says “mmmm”. Then I teach a, p, s, t. You don’t have to learn the alphabet in order. After I have taught these letters, I start blending them into words m-a-p. With learning just 5 letters we can start applying that knowledge and reading. I continue to teach more letters, applying them to the blending process to form words and before you know it, they can read. After m,a,p,s,t–you may want to add b,h,g,n,f,o, etc. Learning new letters and blending them as you go. Having him re-learn the letters and what they say, and then being able to blend those sounds into words will be a HUGE step to reading in first grade. Good luck.
