Letter Games

My child hates to sit down and play games that have to do with letters and sounds. I think I need a class to teach him how to read besides us, the parents. Do you know of anyone that offers a reading program for the summer?

Thanks for writing. I’m smiling a bit because I hear this all the time. “My child performs so well for you (the teacher) but won’t do anything for me at home.” Sometimes children respond much better to an outside party. That doesn’t mean that you aren’t a great parent or that you don’t know how to teach your children, they just know there is a difference with a third party, and usually perform better. It’s very common. Don’t worry.

A good place to start for summer reading programs would be your public schools/districts. Many public schools offer fun and educational summer classes to keep children reading and working throughout the long summer months. Another resource might be a private school in your area. Private schools really need to keep bringing in income throughout the summer months, so often they offer great programs at reduced rates to attract summer clientele. Also your local library might have summer reading camps or bookworm clubs to participate in. Start calling around to educational facilities in your area and you’ll probably find a great summer program just right for you and your child.
