Learning a new language takes a lot of practice. Some academic concepts can be learned quickly and you don’t need to practice them often to have the general idea. A language is completely different. You need to constantly be using your language otherwise it will quickly fade away. Many people learn a language in high school or college almost fluently, but by the time they are 30 it is completely gone. Language skills seem to fade much quicker than other concepts. You have to look for opportunities to use your language at all times, otherwise you will lose it.

Pre-professional exams are extremely competitive, and most people look for anyway to get a leg up. For a lot of people, this means signing up for an expensive preparation course, but is it really worth it? Signing up for a course like that has some benefits, in that you will have a set studying time to keep you on pace, and you will get a lot of great resources. The other option though is to save a couple hundred dollars and buy preparation books. If you can teach yourself and are self-motivated enough to stick to your own study schedule, you can do just as well. Just because everyone else is taking the preparation class doesn’t mean you need to, however, if everyone else is preparing in some way you do need to.
