Paper Planners?

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Whatever happened to the trusty paper planner? Most people in business now use an I-phone or Blackberry to schedule meetings or put things into a to do list, but I still use a paper planner for a few reasons. First, I think it is much easier and quicker to write things down then to enter them into a planner. Next, sometimes the I-phone or Blackberry tries to do too much. For instance, if I simply want to record “Call Linda Back” somewhere, I want do not need an alarm, I do not want to pick which tone rings when it comes about, and I don’t even want to put it in a certain time. I only wanted to create a to-do list, but now I have a list with alarms and ringtones and specific times.

Local Internet Marketing

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Internet marketing can sometimes be hard for local businesses to utilize. Unless you have products available to the entire United States, it is pointless to show a banner ad to someone in Illinois when you are in Texas. However, there are ways you can take advantage of Internet marketing still, such as Facebook ads targeted to people in your city’s network or using search engine optimization. In other words, don’t let the fact that your company only serves your community stop you from advertising online.

Battery Life Let Down

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

One of the most frustrating aspects of laptop computers is the battery life. Unfortunately, after so many cycles your battery will no longer hold a charge, and a laptop that has to be plugged in is simply an extremely small desktop. There are a few things you can do to help you battery last longer however. First, you should not leave your computer plugged in when there is no need to charge it. When you are not using it, shut it down or put it to sleep and unplug the power. Next, you should run your battery all the way down before charging it again. It is impossible to do that every time, but batteries have a set number of cycles, and even if you only use 50% of your battery life, then charge it again, it still counts as one cycle.

Making a Lasting Impression

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

When you are interviewing, you really want to make an impression so that you do not get lost in the crowd. There are a few ways to do this, some better than others. I like to ask them questions about how they like the job. For instance, I will always have questions when they ask if I have any questions for them. I want to engage in a conversation with them, and turn my interview into a casual conversation rather than a Q & A. It seems to make people like me a lot more when I ask them questions. People seem to like to talk, and they like it even more when you let them talk. It is weird and sometimes annoying, but helpful in interviews.
