When you own your own business, it is important to have excellent customer service skills over the phone. You are going to need to be able to answer questions and stay calm with angry or frustrated customers. This is the only instance where working as a telemarketer may pay off. I worked as a telemarketer for about a year until I couldn’t stand it anymore, but now I am much better at speaking clearly and calmly on the telephone. If you are hoping to open your own business and want to work on your customer service skills and sales skills, perhaps you should consider working as a telemarketer for a while if you are currently looking for a job.

It’s simple, of course, but this little enterprise teaches so many things: the law of supply and demand, economics, importance of a good product, and how to give back change for a dollar. The indulgent attention (and business) of adults allows this to be a fairly safe way to begin learning about entrepreneurship.
Later, to have money for gadgets, toys or dates, we may take a job in high school. It may be a fast food joint, an ice cream shop or local car wash. The learning about business and people continues as we have greater interaction with people from our community. We start to learn about bosses, too, and how it is to do a job for someone who is not Mom or Dad or Grandma Phoebe.
