Reading a variety of material can expose the reader to broader ideas and visions of existence and the possibilities life holds for all. Reading acquaints us with different ways to problem solve; we can see, through any given character, ideas that do not work well, without having to go through the situation ourselves. Literature familiarizes us with the human experience-we identify with some and learn to have a broader perspective of others-as we come into contact with characters and circumstances unlike our own.

  Great literature takes us places. Our thoughts can awaken to sights, sounds, smells and emotions we would not have not felt ourselves-if not for a book. We can travel to a different time, a separate world, a place apart through the vehicle of literature. We are permitted entrance to disparate thoughts via the mind of the author or characters presented to us in a book. Literature promotes learning and expands horizons for all who are fortunate enough to be introduced to it.
