Countless hours are spent by those giving care to their elderly or disabled family members in numerous homes and communities. Your loved one may need assistance with certain daily functions such as personal care and hygiene, or the need may be semi-weekly as you help with house cleaning and maintenance for a less able loved one. This time you give helps another to live a life which otherwise would be too much to do alone.

It is important for you, as the caregiver, to find ways to give back to yourself as well. Yes, serving a loved one brings satisfaction, but it can be draining too if it is round the clock care, or if there is no one else to share the burden. There are many non profit agencies and organizations designed to help caregivers who find themselves in the situation of having no “down” time.

It may be difficult to get the balance you really need in your life, if much of your time is spent caring for an elderly loved one, but even a little breather can recharge you for another week-or month-of caring attention given to another. Taking your mind out of the situation at hand can be helpful too. Use the time you are completing mundane tasks to commit a favorite song, saying, poem or mantra to memory. Pull this old favorite out and recite it to yourself when you most need-but cannot take-a break from the demands of being a dedicated caregiver.
