Healthcare Costs

April 23rd, 2009

Healthcare costs are rising rapidly. Some people think a lot of it has to do with malpractice attorneys, and that may be true, but at the same time they could be rising because medical appliances and facilities are increasing rapidly in cost because our technology is getting so advanced. For instance, it costs quite a bit more to make an advanced surgical robot than it does to make a scalpel. Technology is rapidly making huge strides in medicine, but those huge strides do not come for nothing. We are all essentially paying a premium on healthcare for new technologies.

Gluten Free Community

April 22nd, 2009

I recently had a friend find out she had celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to gluten, or wheat based products. Virtually everything has wheat in it, so at first I was worried she would not be able to find anything worthwhile to eat. However, after doing some research and finding out just how many people have celiac disease, I realized that there are many restaurants and food producers that cater towards those with celiac disease. You would never think about it until you meet someone with celiac, but at every grocery store you can find at least a few products that specifically say “Gluten Free.” Also, many restaurants have menus designed for people who are gluten intolerant.

Fashion Differences

April 21st, 2009

What is “in fashion” is different to everyone. Some people constantly think that whatever they wear is in fashion, but to other people they look like a fool. Everyone has their own style, and that style appeals to certain types of people. Some men constantly like to wear suits, whereas others would prefer Birkenstocks and a t-shirt, and some women prefer men who wear suits often, and some prefer Birkenstock wearers. Fashion, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Next time someone tells you what you are wearing isn’t in style, just tell him or her it isn’t in his or her style.

Myspace Music

April 20th, 2009

A fun thing to do is look through myspace music for the next big artist. Many of today’s best musicians came from myspace music, and many more are coming. For instance, I recently found an artist named Drake, whom most people predict will be the next large rapper. His songs have been played over 5 million times! You can also look up bands who have already hit the mainstream entertainment scene. Many of the top bands first release their music on myspace. So next time you are bored, go to myspace and look up some new and interesting music. Practically everyband in the world has a myspace page.

Procrastinating Online

April 18th, 2009

When you are in an online class, it is easy to procrastinate. In addition, no one is there to hold your hand during the learning process. For instance, you may be assigned to watch recorded lectures every week, but no one is really going to check up on you. In that case, it may be tempting to simply skip all the lectures and cram the day before the test. In that case, online classes are not effective. Only people who are self-motivated can truly succeed in online classes, since it can take a lot of discipline.
