Possibly the worst thing you can do on a resume is have a typo. It is unprofessional and comes across either as you don’t really care about getting this job, or that you are careless, both of which are bad. Even when you make the slightest change to your resume, someone should proofread it. Our eyes skip over things and we may miss an error over and over again, but another set of eyes will usually catch it. Sometimes it is hard to find someone to look over it if you are in a hurry, but even a quick glance can catch most errors someone who is interviewing you will catch. It doesn’t need to be a complete rewrite, just a brief proofread.

The best jobs I have ever had were from friends or people I met. I am yet to find a worthwhile job by looking into the newspaper or online at Craigslist. For instance my favorite job I ever had was as a tennis instructor in California. I taught tennis M-F and was a camp counselor at night. I got to live in Pebble Beach for free. It was great, but the only reason I was offered the job was because I had met the owner playing tennis once. Another friend of mine was dating a girl, and her uncle worked at a law firm, and she essentially got him an interview there, and he still works there. Ask friends and family if they know anyone hiring.

When you are interviewing, you really want to make an impression so that you do not get lost in the crowd. There are a few ways to do this, some better than others. I like to ask them questions about how they like the job. For instance, I will always have questions when they ask if I have any questions for them. I want to engage in a conversation with them, and turn my interview into a casual conversation rather than a Q & A. It seems to make people like me a lot more when I ask them questions. People seem to like to talk, and they like it even more when you let them talk. It is weird and sometimes annoying, but helpful in interviews.

Internships are simply extended job interviews. They are great for learning the ropes and all, but you also need to be prepared to ask for a job or actually do the job you’ve been training in for all those months once your internship is over. Internships shouldn’t be disregarded at all, because once you learn the business you will either be looking for a job in the company, or looking at a job in a similar company, in which case the new company will want to call your current employer, or whoever you are doing your internship with. Future employers want to know that you do not blow off people and that you were a hard worker even when you weren’t getting paid.

Instead of hiring a career coach, I have found an excellent mentor. I met this mentor through a friend of my now retired father. He started his own company and now is retired as well. He essentially did everything in his life that I would like to do. So I have been getting advice from him. Perhaps there is someone in your life who would be willing to mentor you. They do not need to be in the profession of your choice, they simply need to be a good person who you look up to. Ask them questions about what they would do differently, or what they think you should do in your situation. A lot of the time you will leave with some of the best advice you will ever get.
